In addition to all the clubs that are offered at Downey High School, another has just been opened. The Asian Culture Club offers a safe space for all students to learn about Asian culture such as food, music, and lifestyle. Founded by President Nathan Thai, 11, Vice President Jesse Tran, 11, Treasurer Anthony Moiseshyn, 10, and Secretary Ysabela Matias, 11. The board felt that DHS needed a club for all students to be included.

“I noticed there weren’t any clubs centered around Asian culture,” Thai said, “I wanted to change that.”

The ACC has made it their goal to make everyone feel welcome and included and to share their culture with the students of Downey High.

“All my life I felt out of place because I was one of the only Asian kids,” Matias stated, “So starting the ACC helped me find a place to belong, and I know it’s giving people who felt similar a place to feel comfortable as well.”

So far, the ACC has conducted two meetings, both of which discussed Asian food and fundraising opportunities they wish to have in the future. With meetings every other Tuesday, they plan to cover as many cultures in the Asian community as possible.

“The ACC is actually a fundraising club,” said Tran, “We plan to donate all of our proceeds to non-profit organizations.”

The ACC hopes to continue the club well into the future and be a safe space for all members of all cultures.
