Even though playing against Paramount High School may seem like it’s a rivalry at times, Tryse Redford, 12, continues to play football, the sport he loves, on October 8, 2021. In order to perform their best, Redford states, “We practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, take a break on Thursday, and come out Friday ready to play, simple.” After tonights win, score being 40-0, Redford is ready to, “Go home, eat, shower, and call bae.” The Downey Football team ends their seventh game of the season with a record of 6-1. The Downey Vikings plan on extending their six game winning streak at the homecoming game on October 15th against Dominguez High School.

Downey’s cross-country athlete, Alyssa Tapanes, 12, is striving through her senior season and reflected on how she felt being athlete of the week. “I feel honored to be considered for it, especially since it’s being commemorated by the school. It’s just a nice feeling to be recognized for your efforts.” Tapanes stated. “Although I already strive to put out my best work for both my team and coaches, getting recognized for my accomplishments definitely helps motivate me to keep going.”

Preparing for a special annual event, Downey High School students are getting the school pumped up at the stage during snack, by hosting their yearly pep rally for the Dig Pink volleyball game. The volleyball players are ready to finally compete against their rival, Warren High School, but there’s  more importance to the game besides just winning. The volleyball players are playing to honor those who have fought and are continuing to fight the battle against breast cancer. To further create awareness for this occasion, the athletes, dance team, cheer team, and many other individuals are spreading their viking pride by wearing pink.

With a new school year, Key club has gotten new club members ready to take on new community service projects this year. There are many events planned for this year such as club rush September 15th & 16th both lunches and a fundraiser at Chipotle on 8500 Firestone Blvd, September 22nd from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. During A lunch, President, Armando Rameriez and secretary, Karina Marquez take the lead in telling the club new upcoming club activities.

With a love for Key Club after being a part of it for three years, Karina Maquez, 11, explains what Key club is about to her. “In Key Club we are always striving to help out our community in any way possible,” Maquez stated. “... Whether it is a clothes drive, planting trees, or sending notes to show our gratitude!”
