In order to help those who cannot afford a dress for dances, Glamour Gown members, Catherine Saldivar, Sara Guillén, Kaylee Aburto, Madeline Weyers, Isabella Fierro, Giselle Garcia, Michelle Vilarino, Kayla Terrazas, and Alexandra Romero come together on January 14 at the Casa de Parley Johnson. “Many of us have been doing this since our freshman year,” Garcia said. “It was nice to see how happy everyone gets once they find the right dress and ‘Say yes to the dress’.”

For the 60th annual tree lighting at the Downey Civic Center on Dec.5, Giselle Garcia, Miss Teen Downey Princess, assists the Downey Rose Float Association by volunteering in the arts and crafts section. “Every year the Rose Float Association provides food for the event,” Garcia states, “which I gladly helped sell and serve.”

Not sure what she career she wants to pursue more, but having a passion in arts, Chelsea Mendoza, 12, is interested in becoming a photographer or a writer. “I chose this career because I love art, words, writing, anything creative, and beautiful or poetic,” Mendoza stated. “I love looking at things differently, or saying things differently, being able to write in a magazine they could see things the way I do.”

With film being her passion, Valeria Tinoco, 12, enjoys writing scripts and making YouTube videos, working towards her future career as a film director. “I have always liked doing this,” Tinoco stated. “It is visually appealing to the point where you can feel something from it. You can connect to it, like someone is watching it but it isn’t you.”

Due to her desire to be a nurse, Stephanie Garcia, 12, is taking health occupations to get hands on training in the hospital. “I chose to be a nurse because I wanted to become someone that could help people,” Garcia stated. “My mom inspired me to become part of the medical field because she was always showing me how to bandage and clean wounds properly when I was young.”

Making the final decision to determine her future, on Oct. 4, Zenaida Terrones, 12, plans to attend National University to get her bachelor’s degree. “I want to be a special ed teacher because I want to help the kids,” Terrones stated. “My mom was a special ed teacher; I want to follow in her footsteps.”

After high school, Nicole Montes, 12, plans to attend to a Cal State college in nursing. “I love making people feel better,” Montes stated. “I currently volunteer and have been getting hands on training regarding the medical field.”

As fall season arrives, Starbucks makes a comeback with its pumpkin spice selections like the Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino. The pumpkin flavored drinks and desserts such as the pumpkin cheese bread muffin and the pumpkin scone, though, are available only during the autumn season.

At the top of the 14 scholars list of Downey High School Andrew Bilodeau, 12, has successfully managed to keep up his grades for four years. “My parents never really pushed me but they did encourage me to do great in school,” Bilodeau stated. “So a lot of the time I got good grades, studied late and worked hard it was a combination of the lesson my parents taught me and the drive I had to look to the future.”

Starting off class with Think with Ink activity Mr. Hwang, a Biomedical Science teacher at Downey High School, poses at his desk in the X building ready to start the new school year with a creative, hands-on environment. “Think with Ink is embedded into the program, so basically whatever you’re doing, it’s a hands on class,” Mr. Hwang stated. “So for example, they did a lab today where they have to come up with a claim and they have to do problem solving and they have to collect data and come up with a conclusion.”

Experienced writers such as Sara Fuentes, graduate, take time out of their day to help students who need advice on how to write better essays or prompts. “It’s a great experience to help students out because I knew I needed help when I was a student,” Fuentes said. “I enjoy giving advice on how to write better because writing is really important for all subjects not just English.”
