Star Wars: The Last Jedi

After The Force Awakens cliffhanger, fans have been waiting for the second part of the new trilogy. The Last Jedi is set to release worldwide on Dec.15.  Some returning characters include Rey (Daisy Ridley), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Joshua Velazquez, 11, reveals which character he is thrilled to see go on another adventurous mission.

“My favorite character is Finn,” Velazquez said. “I like how clumsy he is during some parts of the movie [The Force Awakens].”

New characters have also been introduced to the Star Wars universe. Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) and Paige Tico (Veronica Ngo) are sisters who both work for the Resistance. Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) is an officer in the Resistance and Poe Dameron’s new boss. DJ (Benicio Del Toro) will be part of Finn and Rose’s mission to the casino city of Canto Bight.

Eva Barajas, 10, is excited for these new characters, but there is one in particular that she cannot wait to see on screen.

“I’m excited to see Rose mostly because she’s the first person of color female character in the Star Wars universe,” Barajas said. “I’m really excited to finally see some more diversity in the series.”

Since the trailer release on Oct. 9, fans have been theorizing on what events might occur. One of these popular theories discuss the possibilities of Rey switching sides. Due to a scene from the trailer that seems to be between Kylo Ren and Rey, speculations have risen about Rey joining the dark side. Some even believe that Luke Skywalker will be the one to switch sides, creating a surprise twist.

Jacob Ornelas, 11, does not think these theories are plausible.

“I don’t think either of them will go to the dark side,” Ornelas said. “If Rey was going to, her crystal would’ve turned red, and if Luke was going to then why would he be waiting for Rey?”

Even before the trailer, there has been another popular topic that is widely discussed: Rey’s parentage. Some theories say she is Luke Skywalker’s daughter, while others say that she is a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. There are even theories of Rey being the daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa. Several fans are assuming that her family will finally be revealed in the next movie.

Andrew Salazar, 11, shares his explanation on why Rey’s parents will be shown in the movie.

“I think they’ll reveal her parents if they follow the same story as Luke in episode 5,” Salazar said. “He found a shocking truth, so will Rey.”

The Last Jedi will follow the events after Rey (Daisy Ridley) finds Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on the planet Ahch-To. There, she will begin her training and learn how to use her newfound abilities through Luke’s teachings. Meanwhile, the Resistance and the First Order will continue their battle against each other. The events in the eighth episode will either confirm or debunk these popular fan theories.
