Five Questions with Laura Enslin (Annex Secretary)

June 5, 2012
Q1: What is your job description as an Annex Secretary?
A1: I do everything for the Vice Principals. I handle referrals and paperwork. I also type things for them; basically, the normal office secretary type of things.
Q2: What did you have to do to get this job?
A2: I applied and I had to pass four tests to be hired by the district. Because I live in Downey and because my kids go to school in the Downey District, I wanted the same hours as them so that I can be at home while they are.
Q3: What do you like about working in the Annex?
A3: Oh, I love my job! I get to meet a lot of students and people. I love the people I work with. I love Downey High School in general, and mind you, my kids go to Warren.
Q4: What are some of the challenges?
A4: Because this is the discipline office I deal with kids in trouble who are not happy, and they are rude to me. I get told off and cursed out. I try to make them understand that it’s not me who got them in trouble and try to calm them down. Some of them come back and apologize, but I think dealing with that is the only small challenge.
Q5: What is your favorite/ most memorable Annex moment?
A5: Wow, I think it’s when the students come back and visit me after they leave high school. It’s nice seeing them all grown up, and that’s what I like the most.

After high school, Dominguez plans on going to a state college in California and then hopes to transfer to a UC college after a couple of years. She aims to work in the Behavioral Analyst Unit for the FBI, where she can question criminals and learn more about their thoughts. She is preparing for this by studying Psychology, and she is also taking Sociology and Philosophy. Another dream of hers is to open a humane animal shelter with plenty of play areas and no metal cages. In the meantime, Dominguez hopes to express her writing skills through The Downey Legend and enjoy her last year at Downey High.
