The 60th Grammy Awards have included rap and hip hop as well as other music styles like it has never done in their whole history. On November 28 the Recording Academy revealed the artists Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino took the top categories of this event.

 

Compared to the Grammy Nominations ten years ago, Kanye West was the only hip hop artist in the race for the category of album of the year. Jay-Z leads this year with a total of eight nominations, followed by Lamar with seven and the pop artist/ songwriter Bruno Mars with six earned.

 

One of the biggest hits of the year, the remix version by Puerto Rican musicians Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee called “Despacito”, featuring Justin Bieber has become the first non-English-language track to be both nominated in song and record of the year.

 

Some very popular artist who were not nominated this year include: Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Harry Styles.

 

Valerie Flores, 12, talks about her opinion of the nominations 2018 and who deserved a nomination on this year and who deserved to be nominated this year in spite of the final results.

 

“I think Harry Styles was definitely deserving of a nomination like a lot of artist were deserving and weren’t nominated,” Flores said. “I think they [Grammy Awards] nominate those who attract the highest attention which is okay but not really considering The Recording Academy is meant for creativity, lyrics and meaningful songs and a lot of songs aren’t necessarily that.”

 

Arturo Vega,12, talks about his opinion about incorporating different music genres and languages in this awards.

 

“I am actually surprised that it didn’t happen before but it’s great because it is part of our music and part of our culture,” Vega said. “They are incorporating hip hop and rap because throughout the year those were the trending music styles and I understand why.”

 

During the event the audience will be able to see their favorite artist walking on the red carpet. The artist will give brief interviews and show designed outfit especially decided for the occasion. The fashion police will evaluate this outfits and comment on them during the awards.

 

Rachel Javier, 11, talks about her experience being in the red carpet of the Grammy Awards of 2016 and how being in the live audience contrast with watching the event from your television.

 

“You really get to see behind the scenes and how people are yelling at the celebrities,” Javier said. “A lot of celebrities they don’t act like they seem to on the TV.”
