SM6 Band: Who are they?

Kelly Zabala, Writer

Sibling band, SM6, consisting of siblings George, Isabel, Adam, Emily, Eliana, and Jack Jones,  found themselves to be popular Tik Tok creators. On April 18, 2020, they filmed a video, known as the “Don’t Flinch Challenge, Go” video, which caused their once small fanbase to increase. As more and more people duetted the video on Tik Tok, the more hate and support the band received.

“That video launched us into social media and got us all of that attention” Adam Jones started. “We don’t think we’ll ever regret that video. We were having fun, we feel good about it, we enjoyed making it, and at the least, that’s all that matters.”

Although the band grew in popularity from this video, their presence became a target  to those who enjoy partaking in negative and rude comments. Their videos have been reposted and mocked, and their image was split into two: fun, family band and cringy homeschooled kids. Amidst the online attacks, they grew past it and wrote a song about it. Their song, Oddity, addresses how they are different and how they will forever embrace who they are.

“There was so much hatred, and stuff, all we were doing was putting our content, that makes us happy and makes us smile as well.. [Oddity] came from being different.” Isabel Jones stated. “Everyone saw that we were different, we know we’re different, and we accept that. I think a lot of people are afraid to be different. They feel like they have to fit in. The song is like a message saying you don’t have to try to be someone you’re not so you could fit in.”

Although this video boosted their career, it is not where it started. The siblings’ parents recommended the idea of starting a band. During that time, Emily Jones, drummer, and Adam Jones, lead guitarist, were pursuing their respective instruments and taking private lessons.

“We saw a lot of artists playing live performances and wanted to do what they were doing. There was a kid band and we thought if they could do it, then so could we.” stated Adam. “Originally, it was just [George, Adam, Isabel, and Emily]. Jack and Ellie came in a little later, they were still young.”

During their first performances, they were a cover band going by the name of Summer Monkeys. They played small shows and small venues such as the Two Brothers Roundhouse in their hometown, Geneva, Illinois.

“When we were first starting, it was hard to get good because a lot of people didn’t take us seriously, since we were younger” Emily started. Finishing her thought, Isabel said, “We originally were a cover band and we decided that we wanted to be an original band and that was when we changed our name to SM6. We were having difficulty making that switch because people liked covers, they were familiar and knew it, but finally we did it.”

Shortly after, they released the first version of their EP, Perfect. It was later taken down and released with new recordings of the original songs with an added new song. The album contains five songs and can be found on any streaming service.

“Musically, we grew a lot as artists and we felt like those songs were good songs, but we realized we could make them better.” Stated Isabel. “Plus, we had new ideas, thinking it would be cool to add more into them. We just wanted these songs to be the best they could be.” George adds on.

SM6 has also recently moved from their hometown to Los Angeles, California out of a recommendation from their manager. The band, now residing in LA, has a lot in store for its fans including a tour and a new single, depending on the state of the pandemic. For now, they have announced a tour, “”’Til The Money Runs Out””, which currently only has two dates that are being held in Houston, Tx and Dallas, Tx. Tickets can be purchased here
