Song of the Week: Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran

After taking a year long break, Ed Sheeran has rung in the new year with new music. His comeback was announced on New Year’s Day and was shortly followed by two new singles: “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” Sheeran released these two new songs as well as revealing his new album, Divide. They quickly took over the number one and two spots on the iTunes chart. The single, “Castle on the Hill,” is similar to his previous work; contrary to “Shape of You”, “Castle on the Hill” is a mellow and rhythmic song that carries a strong message in which he describes his life. He explains the hardships and memories starting from the age of six to present life. “And I’ve not seen the roaring fields in so long, I know I’ve grown but I can’t wait to go home,” Sheeran sings. The lyrics reflect the artist’s journey and growth as a person. Ed Sheeran decided to take a break from music in order to explore the world and this song captures how he is finally ready to come back home to his music career. As a senior, this song impacted me since a lot of us [seniors] are ready to leave home and explore but I know that we will not forget all the ties that we have made back home. Divide is expected to be released on Mar. 3 and will include this powerful song as well as 15 other tracks.
