Spring Sports Highlights

The Downey High School spring sports of 2019 include lacrosse, baseball, and swim. The Vikings have brought multiple wins home with minimal losses, keeping Downey as a competitive team to beat.

 

Downey’s Varsity and JV Baseball team have been on a winning streak with their most recent games. Continuing the season strong, the JV team played Lakewood on March 24. Omar Alvarez, 10, praised the team’s excellent performance on the field.

 

“Overall, they did great,” Alvarez stated. “The hitters were seeing the ball and provided the support the pitchers needed.”

 

Downey’s focus on the field drove the Vikings to beat Lakewood 5-3. Their next game was on March 25 against Marina High School in Huntington Beach. Justin Perez, 10, discusses his team’s effort to beat Marina.

 

“We will come in with an aggressive mentality each to put in our work,” Perez stated. “And to get our own part done.”

The “aggressive mentality” worked in their favor as they ended up beating Marina 3-1. They’re next game is Saturday, March 30 at 11 am against Fountain Valley.

 

Girls and boys Swim has also been on top of their game with their latest wins. Their latest meet was against La Mirada High School where all four teams beat their opponents.

 

Sophomore Alyssa Punzalan, talked highly of her team as she discussed their latest game with excitement.

 

“Staring off, our latest meet was at Splash in La Mirada,” Alyssa Stated. “All four teams won the meet!”

 

Downey Swim’s next meet will be home on April 5 against Kennedy High School.

 

Lacrosse season started off with a great win from the lady vikings. On March 27 Downey beat California High School 11-5. Eliza Vargas scored a goal after calling a play for the first time showing off her quick thinking skills.

 

Their latest game was against King High school where the vikings won 12-1. Their next home game is on April 10th against Westridge.
