CTE Programs: Film and Production

According to Sam Sarofeem, 12, he has incorporated the editing skills he learned in Video Production into his YouTube channel, which also benefits his future career. He has also learned to better present himself in front of the camera. Another multimedia production student, Mia Poveda, 12, knew she had a passion for film and, because the “teacher supported everyone regardless of skill level, it allowed her to continue film for her entire high school career. Time management is an important skill that Brody Urzua, 12, has acquired during his time in the class. Expressing his creativity within a deadline has its challenges but an important practice for college whether students plan to continue with film or not. Aside from filming in general, storyboarding and patience are other skills that come out of editing and building a rough draft.

Jezabel Perez, Podcaster

As she enters her third year in Newspaper, podcaster Jezabel Perez, 12, plans on graduating and attending San Diego State University to become more independent but not too far from home. Perez plans to study to become a Social Worker to pursue a career in which she demonstrates her kindness and desire to help others. While in The Downey Legend, Perez hopes to sharpen her listening skills that will also benefit her down her career path.

Perez finds joy in being a podcaster as she loves to talk and hear other people’s stories and tell it in a unique way other than writing. “If I’m not doing something meaningful and making a difference then what is the point? I want to leave this world knowing that I made a difference” Perez explained.

Entering into her final year of high school, Leilani Montes, 12, hopes to expand her horizons in the world of art. Although just a photographer for The Downey Legend, she aspires to interview people in order to make connections with people like she did when she worked on the school play last year. Montes remains undecided on her major, however, dreams of traveling all over the world. Loving history, old countries are her dream destination where she hopes to learn about them and the people. She aims to use the skills learned from The Downey Legend and incorporate them into her traveling. Learning how to interview others and photographing events will help her learn more about the world which she so desires to do so.

“I want to meet more people before I leave…” Montes says, “I find talking to people interesting because I like learning about them…” “Last year I got to work on the school play and it really got me closer to everyone in my class and my teacher. It was nice, especially after the pandemic, to talk to people and get used to a large group of people,” said Montes, hoping to experience this once again.

Madeline Hidalgo, Editor-in-Chief

As a three-year veteran, Madeline Hidalgo, 12, returns to the Downey Legend as a first year Co-Editor in Chief with intentions to make every minute count as her high school career comes to an end. By building up her academic resume as an active member of the robotics team, multiple clubs on campus, and Femineers, she hopes to get into a good college and achieve her dreams of becoming a civil engineer. Her passion for her extracurriculars fuels her to stay active no matter how busy because she loves to see her peers succeed.

“Honestly I just love being involved. In all my extracurriculars I am a leader or I hold responsibility which gives me a purpose and I love what I do,” Hidalgo stated. “In a bunch of different ways we also help other people and provide them with opportunities to build their resume and push for education.”
