On October 3, Downtown Downey hosted its annual Havana Nights, a festival where Cuban culture thrives, a place where the community celebrates tradition. From the sound of a live band to the smell of Cuban cuisine, this festival created a lively atmosphere that brought family and friends together.
The streets were decorated with Cuban flags and booths that brought the community together, but beyond all of this, the groups paused to reflect on what Havana Nights really means to them. Their voices highlight what makes this event so special.
David Gonzalez, the official MC for the past 11 years, tries to ensure that the festival appeals to everyone with
elements that may attract the community. “This event is to celebrate the Cuban community, the Cuban American community, and Downey,” said Gonzalez.
elements that may attract the community. “This event is to celebrate the Cuban community, the Cuban American community, and Downey,” said Gonzalez.
Another staff member, who would like to stay anonymous, shared that Havana Nights started because Downey is a very diverse city. “We try to appeal to all families, we include children’s stuff, adult stuff, they have a bunch of vendors, a bunch of different foods,” they stated.
Similarly, staff member Jasine believes the goal behind Havana Nights has grown into something deeper. “The goal behind Havana Nights just became like a cultural celebration for Cubans..a lot of my friends love coming here because they enjoy connecting with their culture and everything it represents,” Jasine said.
At this cultural event, there are booths that support big and small businesses, ‘Little Lady B’, a small business that sells 100% cotton clothing for kids. The company’s founders were inspired by their niece, Brianna. “She had issues with polyester in her clothing. Therefore, the only thing tolerable was 100% cotton, but we couldn’t find that in the market, so we decided to make our own products,” The owners stated. They recalled one touching moment when families became emotional while looking at their booth. “I think that’s the best reaction because maybe they think back in time, maybe to their childhood when they were little girls,” The owners said.
Whether it’s through music, food, or family-run businesses, Havana Nights continues to remind the community of the beauty of culture, connection, and tradition.
