Song of the Week: ‘God’s Plan” by Drake

Makayla Riley, Writer

Three time Grammy-award winning rapper Drake released his EP titled Scary Hours late January 19 to all music streaming services.  One of the songs on the EP called God’s Plan has gained a lot of popularity and has surpassed a million views, whether it be on Spotify or Apple Music.

God’s Plan has recently taken in 60 million streams on Apple Music and 4.3 million on Spotify, breaking Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.” As of now Billboard has announced the song to be charted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and has became Drake’s fourth No.1 single after his previous hit “One Dance”.

The track is very synth-driven from the beginning and starts off with a catchy beat. In this song the certified triple platinum artist talks about the negativity surrounding him, yet not letting that prevent him from reigning on top because this was what he was destined to do, hence the title of the song. One of my favorite bars from the song is,  “Might go down a G.O.D., yeah, wait/I go hard on Southside G, yuh, wait/I make sure that north-side eat”. It shows Drake’s confidence in his abilities and his assurance to help his loved ones in return of his success.

Drake is memorable for his songs about the haters and heartbreakers in his life, and the same can be heard in this song as well. I love that everytime I listen to one of his songs I can enjoy listening to it in the car or dance around to it in my room. Along with Drake’s style can also be found some humor, “She say, “Do you love me?”/I tell her, “Only partly”/I only love my bed and my momma, I’m sorry”. Agree on you with that one, Drake.

It is still unsure when he will drop a new album, but Scary Hours can assure us that it will be soon. Until then, keep turning up that music and nodding your head to the return of the 6 God.
