Downey’s cross-country athlete, Alyssa Tapanes, 12, is striving through her senior season and reflected on how she felt being athlete of the week. “I feel honored to be considered for it, especially since it’s being commemorated by the school. It’s just a nice feeling to be recognized for your efforts.” Tapanes stated. “Although I already strive to put out my best work for both my team and coaches, getting recognized for my accomplishments definitely helps motivate me to keep going.”

As an immigrant from Russia since 2011, Egor Goncear, 11, struggled adjusting to American culture because of the language barrier. “The hardest thing about moving to America was learning the language,” Goncear says. “I was taking three English classes and I struggled a lot with writing because the Russian and English alphabets are totally different.”
