Planning to go on into a career as a neuropsychiatrist, Catherine Quinones, 12, is going into her first year of The Downey Legend staff as a writer. Although she doesn't have her heart set on any particular school, her plan is to go to a liberal arts college. Outside school, Quinones is involved in a variety of things from being in her fourth year on the lacrosse team, to reading, to being the president of two clubs; Eco club and one she founded herself, The Downey Medical Society. Her variety of clubs and extracurricular activities are what help her be a friendly leader.

As someone who’s in various leadership positions, Quinones has learned a lot about working with other people and leading them, finding her own spark. “I am so involved because of my drive to spark change within the Downey community and share my passions with others. There are copious lessons we can learn from one another, coming from different backgrounds and having our own stories to share.” Quinones said. “These clubs and organizations which I mentor provide a platform for students to exchange ideas and apply themselves to be part of this mission- igniting growth. I only hope to pave the way for others and their academic journeys.”

Known for their staple “opposites attract” outfits, Naomi Baguyo, 12, and Isabella Ramirez, 12, display bold looks within the walls of Downey High School.

“I don’t try to make a specific statement with my clothes, I just like wearing things that make me feel confident and happy,” Ramirez stated.

“I think every so often people are afraid to take on a hyperfeminine approach to fashion, worrying it would be seen as too brash,” Baguyo stated.
