James Franco Allegations

Jesus Aguayo-Cerda, Writer

Recently Hollywood has been rocked by allegations of mistreatment and misconduct by men in the television and film industry, and now former Freaks and Geeks star Busy Philipps has come forward with a story of an encounter with co-star James Franco during their time on the short-lived sitcom. According to Philipps, Franco was a bully on set and she wound up suffering because of it.

In her upcoming memoir,  “This Will Only Hurt a Little,” Busy Philipps recounts an incident from her time working on Freaks and Geeks in which she says James Franco shoved her to the ground. In the alleged incident, Philipps states that she ‘gently hit’ Franco in the chest after being directed to do so for the sake of a scene.

Busy Philipps goes on to say that James Franco then broke character and lashed out, grabbing her arms, screaming in her face, and throwing her on the ground hard enough that she had the ‘wind knocked out of’ her. Philipps also stated that she tearfully shared what happened with costar Linda Cardellini, who advised her to call her manager, and Franco was told to apologize by the director and producers, and he did so.

Commenting on the situation and Franco’s apology is Camila Aguilar, 12, a fan of Freaks and Geeks

“If it is true, and it probably is, it’s messed up what he did especially since she was only doing what the scene asked of her,” Aguilar stated. “I think the issue wouldn’t be so large if he had genuinely apologized to her when it happened, but it seems like he only apologized because he was forced to.”

This Philipps allegation, however, is only the most recent. Five women came forward in January to accuse Franco of inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior, which he vehemently denied. Franco being accused of being violent or manipulative towards women is nothing new.

Speaking on if there may be any truth to the Philipps accusation is Sage Ceja, 12.

“She is definitely telling the truth,” Ceja stated. “He has a history of abusing women and just being a creep. For instance there is that one time he tried to hook up with a 17 year old girl and got caught.”

If these allegations are proven to be true, one question comes up: What can be done about this 19 years later? Franco has faced far worse allegations than this, yet remains starring, directing, and writing in films and succeeding in the entertainment industry. Just last year, Franco won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist.

Giving his opinion on what can be done about the Philipps accusation and all the other allegations facing Franco is Julian Polanco, 12.

“Honestly, not much can be done. Pretty soon we’re all going to forget about this and nothing will happen to him,” Polanco said. “Even if the woman sue him, he will probably just get a slap on the wrist and go through a couple weeks of being scrutinized. The only thing that can be done is to just not forget.”

Philipps memoir, “This Will Only Hurt a Little,” was released on Oct. 16 and the Franco allegation is only a very miniscule part of her book. The rest of the memoir consist of Phillips offering advice and recounting her life.

Whether the allegations of James Franco bullying Busy Philipps on set and just being a villain to women in general are true or not, it is imperative that they, along with all other allegations like these, are met with unbiased skepticism not just assumptions of truth or false.
