Small Businesses Review: Sweet Soil Candles

Jessica Arellano, Social Media

“Sweet Soil Candles” is a family owned business located in Los Angeles, that offers candles and wax melts. This business is run by mother, Jessica Corona and her two daughters Kayleen and Kyana Corona. The business started during the Covid-19 pandemic. “My mom had always wanted to start her own business. When Covid hit, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to begin a family business. She believes this would bring us together even more and turn something that started as a hobby into maybe something great,” J. Corona said.

When creating this business the Corona family had a goal in mind. As two of them suffer from health issues like allergies, asthma, and migraines they wanted to create candles and wax melts for people like them. I recently purchased the “Strawberries and Guava” candle. Being someone who is sensitive to smells and prone to headaches caused by certain scents, this candle was perfect. In the container the candle smells sweet and not something I would usually lean towards. However, when burning it the scent is not overwhelmingly sweet. The candle fills my room with a subtle, sweet, strawberry smell.

In order to make these products suitable for those with health issues such as allergies, asthma, and migraines, Sweet Soil Candles products are made with those in mind. “In today’s society, we see many people are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. So why not go with our products that are carcinogen-free, cruelty-free, phthalate-free, toxin-free, and vegan” J. Corona explained, “Since our candles are made with 100 percent all-natural soy wax, which derives from American grown soybeans, this means your candle will burn slower, and therefore, you will enjoy it longer; compared to many other candles,” J. Corona added. Sweet Soil Candles uses both cotton and wooden wicks. Not only are their candles long-lasting, but the wooden wicks make a crackling sound that creates a comfy setting for your home.

These products are made with 100% soy wax and fragrance oils. The soy wax allows for a longer lasting burn compared to paraffin wax, but is also environmentally friendly. Soy wax is made from renewable resources and does not require chemicals to enhance the scent.

If you are sensitive to scents or find other candle products irritating to your health, try Sweet Soil Candle products. Because these products are handmade from a small business you are not going to get any extra chemicals or ingredients bigger companies might have in their products. By supporting this small business you are not only supporting the work of a family, but also benefiting your health.

Sweet Soil Candles offers many scents in the forms of candles and wax melts. Their best selling scents include “Strawberries and Guava”, “Black Currant Absinthe”, and “Sea Salt and Orchids”. When asked about their personal favorites the Coronas listed “Snickerdoodle”, “Black Currant Absinthe”, “Beach Bum”, and “Churros”. As you can see they offer a range of scents suitable for everyone. I recommend visiting one of their pop-ups and smelling the candles and wax melts in person to find the best fit for you. They also have a website where you can order as well. The website even organizes their scents in categories of Citrus, Floral, Fresh and Clean, Fruity, Sweet and Spicy, and Woody. With these categories you are sure to find what you are looking for.

Sweet Soil Candles also offers seasonal candles. They have a Fall and Halloween collection as well as holiday themed scents such as gingerbread and peppermint mocha. With the holidays coming up you can find cute christmas trees, gingerbread, and heart shaped wax melts that make perfect gifts.
