Distance Learning’s Toll on Elementary Students
While some parents are adamant about their children returning to school, Paulina Rosario, DUSD parent, is not as her kindergarten son is doing well with distance learning. “He has been doing amazing with distance learning, I don’t think he’s missing anything except interacting on the playground with the kids,” Rosario stated. “I think his learning has advanced doing online school and I don’t think there’s much of a difference if he were to go in person.”

After nearly a year of what was supposed to be 2 weeks of distance-learning, many parents like Camille Chatman want their children back in school due to at-home distractions. “If possible, I would prefer that my child goes to school in-person. My child has been diagnosed with ADD, and I believe being at home for school allows her to be easily distracted,” Chatman stated. “In-classroom instruction offers the opportunity for more one-on-one attention and better classroom management. Technical issues, which causes delay and sometimes the need to end class, would also not be a factor.”
