St. Vincent Returns With “MASSEDUCTION”

Three years after the release of her eponymous album, St. Vincent, otherwise known as Annie Clark, released her fifth studio record on October 13. Known for her epileptic guitar skills and involved lyrics, “MASSEDUCTION” brings new life to Clark’s paroxysmal alternative rock tendencies.

Clark’s ingenious manipulation of the alt rock genre paired with the abstract contributes greatly to the record’s ultimate design. While the cover is doused with neon reds, fluorescent pinks and a smattering of cheetah print, the music itself poses a newfound maturity from the eclectic range “St. Vincent” put forth in 2014. “MASSEDUCTION” captures an in-between of Clark’s 2014 work and more recent singles like “Teenage Talk” (2015).

“MASSEDUCTION” explores a sound descending from that of her self-titled album with more grit, blood and sweat﹣a Bowie-Byrne love child fueled by pulsating percussion and screeching guitar. However, Clark’s music maintains an emboldened streak that is all her; satiric, cynical, self-aware. “Los Ageless” explores Los Angeles’ questionable culture; “Sugarboy” pokes at gender; “Happy Birthday Johnny” mourns the loss of a friend. Clark croons a final “When you get free, Johnny / I hope you find peace” and leaves it at that.

For “MASSEDUCTION,” Clark collaborated with the minds of John Congleton and Jack Antonoff, both Grammy Award-winning producers. Congleton is accredited with Clark’s 2016 Grammy for “St. Vincent” and Antonoff with work by Taylor Swift, fun., Lorde and the Bleachers. Antonoff is a recent addition to Clark’s songwriting arsenal, his strongest influence seen in “Los Ageless”’s hook. Clark also brought the voice of Cara Delevingne into the album’s production; she recites the mantra-like chorus in “Pills” before Clark launches into into the song’s lullaby bridge.

In addition to the release of the album, Clark announced an international headline tour, dubbed the “Fear the Future” tour, that will kick off in late October.
