On May 29, 2015, British girl group, Little Mix released their first single called “Black Magic” off of their third studio album. The four girls, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, and Jade Thirlwall, were formed exclusively for the eighth season of The X-Factor in 2011, and later became the first group to ever win the competition. In 2014, the girl group was scheduled to do a U.S. tour, but canceled it to focus on their third album. After the official cancelation announcement, Little Mix released a statement on their social networking pages saying, “we could do the tour and let other people do the album for us but that’s not what we’re about; it isn’t a Little Mix album if we’re not writing or involved…” With the disappointment of the tour being canceled, there was a lot of expectation for the next single and album to be worth the wait. The single “Black Magic” was set to be released on May 26, 2015, but was released on May 21 after the single leaked online on May 20. The song has a new sound for the group that is more 80’s pop rather than their previous single, “Salute”, which had a more fierce sound. The music video was filmed at the University of Southern California in April 2015 and the video portrays Little Mix dressed as girls who are different from the typical popular girls. They then drink a potion to become more likeable. The music video had received criticism for showing “geeky” girls trying to become “attractive”. In an interview for uk.celebrity.yahoo.com, when asked about it, Leigh-Anne said, “we hope that people understand the message, and the message is that the potion we take is confidence.” The girl group is notorious for being supportive and inspiring girls around the world to stay true to themselves. Little Mix will perform “Black Magic” for the first time at Capital’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on June 6, 2015.
