Young the Giant, Irvine-born band formerly known as The Jakes, released the song “Apartment” on their self titled work in January 2011; the tune made it to number 26 on the US Alternative chart in 2012. With three songs from their first album making it to the US Alternative chart, the band has earned these spots with both their songwriting and performing skills. The topic of youthfulness and its accompanying issues like not having a sense of self and fear of the future, is almost always featured in their lyrics. Lead singer Sameer Gadhia sings, “’Cause sooner or later, this is bound to stop/Come on, let’s savor what we’re falling for,” in “Apartment”. Soft guitar and percussion tunes are woven with Gadhia’s voice and complement one another. Also, the song has an underlying meaning conveying that all things must come to an end, whether it is good or bad. Like any other rookie bands, the group began as openers for other bands like Minus the Bear and Steel Train. Both their performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards and tour with veteran band Incubus kick started their career as one of the best new rock bands of 2011.
