Leanna Bobadilla, Social Media Manager

While innately mellow and lovely to all, Leanna Bobadilla, 12, packs a punch through her zealous work, turning heads to the brilliance of her infinite imagination. Approaching her third year in The Downey Legend, the Social Media Manager dabbles in photography and art, hoping to major in business and minor in graphic design at Cal State Long Beach. Besides designing, Bobadilla is a boba connoisseur and enjoys listening to music in her free time. 

 

“Honestly it’s just the idea of having so many possibilities.” Bobadilla stated, “Even if the process feels difficult, as doing new things often feels like, knowing that I’m doing the best I can with what I know is good to not be so hard on myself.”

“Well, the streets are far less crowded, but there are still some people just hangin’ out on street corners. A couple days ago I saw a preacher, well, preaching, not wearing any sort of mask to protect himself and others, which is kinda sad to be honest. Drug deals are still being carried out, so theres not much change in that aspect of my neighborhood. Overall, the changes are just really subtle; there are still people who are outside, but again, not as much as before.”

The man who created this exhibit, Eduardo Viramontes, has his own way of thinking about his art. “I always believed in myself, so I just kept making stuff no matter what people thought of my art,” Viramontes stated. “I wanted to make it for myself and I always want to just get better at what I do. Its nice to look back and see how far youve gotten and realizing all the things youve accomplished. It keeps me motivated too.”

Lobo, Viramontes’ German Shepard, passed away in the time the piece Gracias Amigo was being made.“It was a significant loss for me, especially in a busy time like this year,” Viramontes said, “ but I turned the event into motivation to finish the piece in his honor and as a thank you. A sign on the construction fence around Apollo Park holds details for the renovation plans put up by the City of Downey. City council member Sean Ashton said, “If there was one thing that I would have added now in hindsight, it would have been pickleball courts. This is a newer sport that is gaining popularity, but at the time of the creation of the Park Master Plan, it wasnt well known yet.”

At the entrance of the park, the welcoming Apollo Park sign is now surrounded by a green construction fence with a poster that warns people of what is behind the fence, general people not being allowed for the next two months. “Our parks are used by quite a lot of our residents, especially the big four(Apollo, Furman, Golden, and Wilderness Parks) and these improvements will continue to attract new users to the parks for years to come,” Ashton said.

Scattered around the entrance of the park are bulldozers and many supplies being used for the ongoing renovations that cost up to $7.29 million (including the Denace the Menace park which is under renovation as well). “Without the 1/2 cent sales tax that the voters approved, we would not have been able to start on these improvements,” Ashton stated, “The first two parks to get started were Apollo Park and Dennis the Menace Park back in May and they are scheduled to open in November.”

The piles of dirt and rubble surround what is known as the Apollo Park playground, a temporary eyesore to what will later be replaced by an even better park for people to enjoy with new picnic tables, picnic shelters, restroom improvements, and new field lights. “We really havent upgraded our parks since they were built,” Ashton said.

Comic-Con 2019

Webtoon is a growing platform for aspiring artists to publish their stories and have their talents be discovered. The company used Comic-Con as a chance to scout out other people with the same potential many others have shown by letting people put their art on sticky notes and sticking it on the wall they put up.

People tend to let themselves unwind and have fun at such a big convention like Comic-Con. Having just danced to Thriller, by Michael Jackson, amongst two or three other songs and they all posed for a group picture.

As soon as the clock struck 9:30 A.M the eager fans of Los Angeles Comic-Con faced into the convention hall. Security guards could be heard telling fans to stop running to prevent injuries.

Stan Lee was in charge of Los Angeles Comic-Con, or as it was previously known as Stan Lee’s LA Comic-Con and Comikaze Expo among other names, so it was fitting to see many Marvel characters at the convention after his passing as a way to honor him. Captain America is among one of the groups of characters Stan Lee helped create.

Cosplaying and being a vendor are usually kept separate at conventions like Comic-Con but Michelle Prebich shows a love for both, dressed as John Marston, from the video game franchise Red Dead Redemption. “I really loved John Marston in the first game and thought his arc in the second game was just so satisfying.” Prebich said. “So other than a love for the character, I thought it would be a fun challenge to put together a western victorian outfit.”

Original characters are a common thing for artists to have and this 12-year-old artist, Emilio Gallardo, is no exception to this. “I’ve been working on him for a while,” Gallardo said, “and so far this is my favorite version of him.”

Some progress on putting the major details with the tape on Chacon and Curiel’s Mural. “No one else had done it,” Curiel said, “I wanted to do something unique or different and somewhat challenging.”

The tape mural in its early form with only the sketch and some tape placed on it can be seen, the photographed few days old work belonging to sophomores Anisa Chacon and Diana Curiel. “The design seemed easy enough at the time,” Chacon said, “The tape kept unsticking from the wall, it was hard to get it to not fall off.”
