As a first year photographer for The Downey Legend, Viviana Alba, 10,  hopes to become more involved in school through newspaper.  A hardworking and ambitious student, she plans to join sports medicine and enter the medical field in the future.  Alba enjoys taking scenic nature photos in her free time and is most looking forward to photographing sports events this year.  

 

“I feel like people really enjoy looking at what’s up with sports,” Alba stated.  “So I really want to capture good moments for people to look back on.”

The Downey High School boys varsity volleyball team celebrated their win against Bell Gardens High School on Wednesday, March 8, that took place inside the Downey High school Gymnasium with a setting score of 3-2. The Vikings played very hard throughout the game and showed much effort and although it was a close game, they were proudly able to claim this victory.

On February 22, 2023, the Downey girls varsity soccer team defeated La Canada with a score of 15-3 on Downey High School’s soccer field. The girls gave an amazing performance on the field which started their season great, as this was their first win of the season.

On February 10, 2023, the boys varsity basketball team competed in a CIF playoff game in the Downey High School Gymnasium where they, unfortunately, lost the game with a score of 40-54. The boy’s had an amazing season this year, with a record of 26-4, and although it may not have ended with the outcome that was hoped, the team is very proud of their performance this year and are grateful for the successful final season of their high school years.

As the 2022 boys water polo season comes to an end, Uriel Villa, head coach of the boy’s and girl’s water polo team, explains what led this team to a 12-11 victory in the CIF semifinals on November 9, 2022, at the Downey High School Aquatic Center against Schurr High School. “This group has the most balance we’ve ever had. We have seniors with experience. We have youngsters that come in with a lot of talent that provide extra support to the seniors where we dont have to rely on just them” Villa stated. “We have a well-balanced team where a lot of people can contribute by scoring goals, playing good defense, and just being a good, solid, all-around well-balanced team.” With this win, Downey High’s boy’s water polo team advances to the CIF finals for the first time in decades where they will play against Yucaipa.

Earning another win, the Downey High School football team took on Camarillo on November 11, 2022, at the Allen Layne Stadium for CIF Quarterfinals with a score of 31-28. With this win, the Downey Vikings now have a 10-2 record for this year.
