Wanting to get more involved with school activities, Santiago Mares, 12, joins the newspaper staff as a first year member. "I am just trying to get involved at school and making a small difference,” Mares said. "I took Photo 1 and 2 last year and now I want to get more involved in it all."  

 

Santi is someone you can always talk to and hang with. He doesn’t judge or lags on anyone. He is a real one, someone who is both reliable and crazy. If I could choose anyone to do a challenge or go on an adventure with, it would be Santi, one of my favorite people in this class and one of the best photographers I know! From going out to shoot photos together to eating lunch together every Wednesday, Santi has created a dent in my high school experience and I won’t ever forget it.  We’ve had many adventures and experiences together and so much drama has crossed our paths. During our time in high school, you make memories good and bad but most importantly are the memories you make with certain people. These people are who make high school great and Santi you are one of those people. ESPECIALLY to me. Don’t ever stop being you and I know in the future you will be successful in everything you do!!

Discussing about a business on May 3rd in the Downey high school theater Anna Rodriguez speaks on what incited her to form an assembly. “My biggest inspiration to bring something like this is to the school was the students here at Downey,” Rodriguez said. “The seniors here are the future and it’s important that they found out how social media works.”

Attending the social media assembly on May 3rd in the Downey high school theater, Anthony Castillo, 12, supports his statement on how attending this assembly has helped him out for his career. “Being able to be a part of this assembly is honestly a great opportunity,” Castillo said. “It’s helped me figure what to be aware of and what to expect with my future.”

Introducing the special guest of the Nissan Assembly on May 3rd in the Downey high school theater, Ms. Simpson speaks on what she hopes each student that attended took with them after the assembly. “I hope that they understood that a lot of the times, the messages that schools give is that social media is a place that is scary,” Simpson said. “But there is still a lot of good that happens on social media.”

Running towards home base to score on Apr. 4, Janine Gutierrez, 10, pitches the importance of team communication . “I love how when everything matters or when it all goes to the last minute everyone buys into what were doing,” Gutierrez said. “We just play better when everything goes our way and when we communicate.”

Attempting a double play after a pop fly during the game in the softball field on April 4, Jayleen Torres, 12, gives her insight on how being a part of the team has changed her. “Being a part of this team has made me a better person and a better softball player, it has taught me a lot of things,” Torres said. “It has helped me overcome so many problems and basically just made a whole new person with my attitude and my love for the game.”

After a hit in the softball field against town rivals Warren High School on Apr. 4, Joeie Gallardo, 11, discusses the importance of role playing as a team during a game. “I feel like every player has a very important position,” Gallardo said. “Some players let it affect the whole team and the game itself and some players just hold it in.”

Coordinating the Carnival of Champions on Mar. 30 in the Justice stadium, Director of Education Jennifer Robbins advocates that going to this event is worth the time. “In my own opinion, it really is a great time for the community to come together and enjoy the day,” Robbins said. “The kids can expand their levels of camaraderie and their connections with other students.”

Working with the Stop the Traffick team at Downey High School on Jan 30, Devin Ayala, 11 (right) asserts how being a part of the team has opened his eyes to reality in human trafficking. “Awareness was my main concern,” Ayala said. “Before the event, I was quite unaware of just how frequent sex trafficking happens, especially so close to me.”

Jumping up for a block attempt, Hailey Harris, 12 and Carissa Mendibles, 12 asserts their thoughts on how the school spirit encourages the team to keep playing at their best. “[Viking Nation] Definitely helps a lot; like I said we were a little bit quieter than usual,” Harris said. “But having all of our fans here and our cheerleaders really pumped us up.”
