Primary Elections

Super Tuesday took place on March 5th, 2024. It is the event in which the largest number of states hold their primary elections. A primary election is when voters select their candidates for their political party; basically, they vote for who will be their presidential candidate. The Democratic and Republican party held their election to vote for their candidate.

Mrs. McClain, one of Downey High’s Government teachers, advised about what to do when the primaries come:” Go online and search the candidates, look at the bias of the source, and educate yourself about the candidate long before November”, McClain states.

On March 6th, 2024, Republican nominee Nikki Haley announced she would be dropping out of the presidential race. This leaves Donald Trump as the primary Republican candidate. President Biden is the primary Democratic candidate. According to The Associated Press, Biden has 1,886 delegates and Trump has 1,066 delegates. 424 California delegates won by Biden and 169 California delegates won by Trump.

When asked how both non-voters and voters can have their views reflected in politics, Mr. Nevarez, said “ If you feel strongly enough about certain issues, you can still contact the members of Congress and the member who represents your geographic area, and you will be able to vote one day. You could write a petition by many people to tell them how you’d like them to vote on certain bills or other issues. You don’t have to be 18, younger people can also volunteer to work on a campaign if there’s someone whose idea you really like and want to support. Anyone can contact their member of Congress but [if you’re under 18] they know you can vote for them. if you’re 17, they should listen more”.

Recently, on 8 March 2024, at the State of the Union Address, President Biden stated: “To lead America, the land of possibilities, you need a vision for the future of what America can and should be. I see a future where we defend democracy, not diminish it. I see a future where we restore the right to choose and protect other freedoms, not take them away.” This election sets the scene for the upcoming November presidential election.

Embrace being bad at things and just commit to being bad,” says Reyes. “The truth is you're never going to get any better at whatever you’re trying to do, unless you be bad! You have to be bad at something in order to start being good at it. You have to learn to accept and make friends with when you do bad.”
