Texas Border Policy

Following the earlier term of 2024 the US has kicked off the new year with civil and statewide fighting over the US border policy. Large portions of the southern Texas border are being heavily fortified with varying materials such as storage crates, and containers, and topped off with razor wire. After repeated warnings from the federal government under the Biden administration to loosen up on stopping immigration Texas has refused multiple times, opting to double down and prevent migrating immigrants. In doing so Texas has gathered the attention and backing of numerous other states primarily Republican-leaning ones

Eagle Pass, Texas, has turned into the epicenter of a growing feud between Texas and federal authorities over how to tackle the migrant crisis and who has jurisdiction over that part of the US-Mexico border.

The dispute intensified on January 10, when Texas authorities effectively blocked US Border Patrol agents from a 2.5-mile area of Eagle Pass, which had seen a surge of migrant crossings. This area includes Shelby Park, a city park on the Rio Grande that is now fenced off with gates and razor wire – impeding the Border Patrol’s access. On January 12, after the Texas Military Department “seized and secured Shelby Park,” two children and a mother drowned in a nearby part of the Rio Grande. Now, Texas and US officials are accusing each other of contributing to the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Travis Padilla
Travis Padilla, Writer
As Travis Padilla, 12, begins his final year at Downey High, he also ventures out into his first year in Newspaper as a writer.  Although Padilla does not see writing as a potential career option, his involvement in Newspaper comes from a connection with a previous Newspaper alumni.  In his free time, Padilla enjoys fishing, hiking, and going out with friends, so it comes as no surprise that we will see him become a ranger in one of our beautiful national parks in the next couple of years.  Padilla also mentioned he is a fan of horror movies, therefore his favorite holiday is also Halloween, so don’t be afraid to ask him for movie recommendations. Padilla says his favorite quote is simply, “You remember lesson about balance?  Lesson not just karate only.  Lesson for whole life.  Whole life have a balance.” Padilla explains that this quote is essential to his ability to have a balance between school and life not just because it’s his favorite movie.   “I want to learn how to articulate myself better by being able to better put my thoughts into words,” Padilla stated.
