Participating and promoting his club at the annual Club Rush of the school year, Senior Vice President Joaquin Perez shares how Camp Savio is an amazing way to be a part of the community helping kids at the Roundabout at Downey High School on September 7, 2023. Camp Savio meets every Friday during A lunch in building B-216, and B lunch in building R-3. “Being a camp leader is fun, you get to see all the personalities of the kids and get one-on-one time with them” Perez stated. “You're also putting yourself out there and learning to be better by communicating.”
As her second year as a photographer, Jazmin Cantoran, 12, intends to improve her time management and prioritize what’s most important to her this year while also improving her photography skills. Cantoran states how photography is a form of self-expression to her, as she has trouble speaking out a lot, so she enjoys how expressive photography allows her to be. “I’m definitely more social…I’ve always struggled a bit with expressing myself so I feel like photography really allows me to express what I want to.” Cantoran also stated how the newspaper has benefited her these past 2 years. “I’m very quiet but it’s made me branch out and meet a lot of new people which I really like.”
As a first-year photographer, Alexis Cazares, 11, is ready to showcase her photography skills. Cazares is on the girl’s softball team. She’s very aware of how to communicate and strengthen those close to her. Outside of school, she is usually spending time with her friends and family, an important aspect of her life. Cazares describes herself as loyal, and expressive through her personality.“My grandma has influenced me to be a strong person,” said Alexis. “She doesn’t give up, she’s a fighter and that’s something I admire her about; she doesn’t stay quiet and ensures her voice/opinion is heard.”
