A week after the release of “My My My!”, Troye Sivan released his new single, “The Good Side”, on Jan. 19 and has already surpassed one million views on YouTube.

Throughout the song, Sivan narrates a story of a relationship that did not end on great terms. He expresses regret about the way the breakup was handled. Sivan also shows the good and bad outcomes, hence the single’s title. It highlights the fortunes that came through his way, while his ex was not as lucky.

One of my favorite lyrics was, “I got the good side of life. Travelled the universe twice. So many thoughts I wanted to share, but I didn’t call because it wouldn’t be fair.” Sivan talks about his rising success as a singer. Because of his achievements, he has been able to travel and experience new things. Despite the distance, Sivan found himself thinking about his ex. He wanted to contact them, but could not find himself to do so. To him, it would not be fair to call them out of the blue and talk about how great his life has been.

The slow tempo of this song captures the heartbreak Sivan and his ex went through, especially the latter. He sings with a sympathetic and remorseful tone to show how much he regrets his past actions. His guilt can be felt by listeners through the ballad, which creates the perfect song to cry to.

“The Good Side” greatly contrasts the upbeat and energetic “My My My!”, proving the diversity of Sivan’s music. He shows that he is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone in order to create a fresh tune. Because of Sivan’s range, his music can appeal to listeners with different tastes in songs.
