Hanging like a fruit, listening to froot

Welsh singer Marina Lambrini Diamandis, known by her stage name Marina and the Diamonds, released the song “Froot” on Oct. 10, 2014, in honor of her birthday. The song is a product of the material she has been working on for her new album that will be released in 2015. Diamadis has been able to successfully incorporate a wide spectrum of genres in her music from alternate pop, in her album The Family Jewels, to electropop and new wave music in her second album Electra Heart. “Froot” uses a mix of all genres Diamandis has played with in her previous albums, making it a fun song with a catchy beat and an enticing melody. Throughout the song, Diamandis introduces herself in third person as she compares herself to a fruit tree in the sense that she has to always be clean and have a good reputation with guys. The verse, “Hanging around like a fruit on a tree/ Waiting to be picked, come on cut me free,” shows Diamandis comparing herself to fresh fruit that ripens in the summer and waits to be someone’s choice or “pick.” She waits all year for summer as she prepares herself to be a dreamy guy’s pick. She encourages men with her playful tone to pick her before it is too late because all fruit rots if you wait too long to pick it. Diamandis’s upbeat selection serves her well as it leaves people with excitement and anticipation for what is to come in her unnamed, upcoming album.
