Go back to sleep

Swedish DJ and music producer Tim Berling, better known as Avicci, released the house-influenced track “Wake Me Up” from his first album, True, in June 2013. Avicci began producing electro- house music in 2007 and was ranked No. 6 on the Top 100 DJs chart in DJ Magazine. “Wake Me Up” has been Avicci’s most successful single, peaking at No. 1 on both European and American music charts. Conveniently enough, the track was released during the recent EDM craze. The track was a serendipitous encounter between Avicci and lead guitarist Mike Einziger from alternative rock band Incubus. The two came up with the different chord progressions and later incorporated Aloe Blacc’s lyrics throughout the song. Although the lyrics, “So wake me up when it’s all over/When I’m wiser and I’m older,” gave the tune a sentimental feel to it, the overly repetitive electro/ country beats sounded too similar to a folk track sped up. From the heavy guitar strums, to the strong electro pulses, the entirety of the track came off as a modernized version of the popular 90s song: “Cotton Eye’d Joe.”
