$At Downey High School, KIWIN’S Victoria Arguello, 11, encourages fellow students at Club Rush to join with information sheets and sweets on Wednesday, September 14. “Our goal was to get as many people involved and excited about joining KIWIN\'S,” Arguello said,” and we make a huge difference in Downey through all of our community service projects like city clean ups.”$

$When asked about what she wants for Christmas, Jacqueline Gonzalez, 10, tells us that she does not focus too much on gifts. “I haven\'t really thought about it,” Gonzalez stated. “Maybe a computer so I can work on my school stuff more.”$ $In light of the holidays, Kendra Gonzalez, 12, has a more thoughtful gift in mind that she wants. “For Christmas I want my step brother to come home,” Gonzalez stated. “He doesn\'t live with us anymore, he lives with his uncle in Fresno. We used to be really close.”$ $Being merely two weeks away from Christmas, Jacquelyn Bernabe, 11, talks about how she simply just wants to see her family. \"I haven’t really seen my family much the past few years,” Bernabe states, “It would be great to just catch up with them\".$

$Looking to continue his four year long track journey, Louis Zuniga, 12, is planning to continue his passion into the collegiate level. “ I feel like I need to try my best especially since colleges are coming and to see where I\'m going to go and which offers I should accept.” Zuniga said. “ I\'m not really tripping about leaving high school track because these are the lower leagues”$

$Gearing up for the holiday season Downey’s ASB gets festive in their ASB room and hung up their own stockings. Kimberly Bravo, 12, tell us all about it. “We decorated the ASB room to get into the holiday spirit and to appreciate one another for all the hard work we do all year long.” Bravo said, “I would say we enjoy Christmas because it\'s a time to spend with your family and just a happy time to cherish everyone and look forward to the new year.”$

$Sharing the christmas feel with everyone who visits Mrs. Aguilar and Mrs. De La Garza dressed up the counseling office with red garland big red bows all around. “We love to decorate the office because it\'s the most wonderful time of the year,” Mrs. De La Garza said. “We love how it brings all the students together and everyone enjoys it,” Mrs. Aguilar said.$

$Nov. 8th, 2016 is an important day to most Americans, Andrew Enriquez, 12, is not old enough to vote yet but, that does not stop him to share his thoughts on this year\'s Election. “I expect America to make the right decision,” Enriquez said. “I expect America to realize that we need to start paying more attention to politics.”$

$With a cumulative GPA of a 4.1, Tim Zuniga, 12, believes senioritis tried to get the best of him. “Senioritis is a disease; it\'s real,” Zuniga said. “Once you fall in too deep it\'s hard to get out, but in the end I’m thankful to be attending UCI in the fall.”$ $Filling her senior year with hard work and determination, Lesley Delgadillo, 12, enjoys the way she experiences her last year at Downey High School. “It was very stressful but all very worth it,” Delgadillo said. “Senioritis definitely started to kick in during the beginning of second semester, but I told myself I couldn\'t slack off.”$

$Despite initially facing the possibility of her acceptance into Cornell with doubt, senior, Vivian Sanchez welcomed a pleasant surprise upon the news regarding it. “It\'s always been somewhere I really wanted to go because my favorite author and my favorite Supreme Court Justice went to Cornell,” Sanchez said, “so I’m super excited to become a part of Cornell’s alumni.”$

$Senior, Jenna Kim, reads George Orwell’s novel 1984 and reflects on how it connects to 2016. “Yes, I do feel that 1984 connects to our world. Though it\'s not exactly as in the book; everything nowadays is digital. People can hack into my computer and see what I do, websites such as Facebook keep track of what I like and ads pop out from the sites I visited, and cameras are everywhere,” Kim said. “The most disturbing connection to the real world are the similarities of the book and how I think that George Orwell\'s message is somewhat true.”$

$Former cheerleader, Lizette Chavez, 11, feels like she needs a different perspective of the field. “Powder Puff is a fun change because I\'m actually going to be in the game instead of cheering on the sideline,” Chavez said. “Hopefully the juniors come out with the victory.”$

$Getting his inspiration from and 80s themed party, Michael Ramirez, 12, brought out bright colors to Downey High School. “I\'m all about school spirit,” Ramirez said. “This day is all about vibrant colors, so I was really excited.”$

$\"I decided to give editing a shot after I watched YouTube videos,” Jazyln Contreras, 10, said. “I was terrible at the beginning, so I almost gave up, but I kept sticking with it and, to this day, I love to edit my videos and share them to my friends and the Internet.\"$

$\"I really like having him at Downey. Everything is just so much easier when you have your dad a couple of hallways down,\" Julissa Villalobos, 11, stated. \"I don\'t really see him until after school since they\'re so many students, but if feels nice to know he\'s there. I feel like we\'ve grown a lot closer since his job; I\'ve also met a lot of really awesome people though him. It\'s great.\"$

$In the middle of second half, senior Justin Alarcon\'s only focus is to repossess the ball for his team during an away game against Paramount on Jan. 31. “It’s important. I need to talk to my six,” Alarcon said. “And my fullback and my centerbacks to make sure we get possession back.”$

$First year player Andrea Suresh, 9, plays as a defender for Downey High School\'s girls JV lacrosse team. “I play defense and I like this position because I get to have contact with the opposing team,” Suresh said. “I also really love being able to support our goalies in stopping the ball.” (Eliza Vargas)$ $Starting off her freshman year as a captain for Downey High School\'s girls lacrosse team, Naomi Villescas looks forward to bringing nothing but positivity to her team. “This season I want to help my team by pulling us through our rough patches and pushing us forward instead of dwelling on certain parts,” Villescas said. “ I\'m also looking forward to connecting with the other girls more and finding our rhythm as a team.” (Eliza Vargas)$

$Playing as “a” goalie for the girls JV lacrosse team, Berlyn Miranda, 9, enjoys everything that comes with her position. “I enjoy being goalie a lot because it gives the team a chance to really trust me since I am the last line of defense and I\'m the \"eyes\" of the team when I\'m on the field,” Miranda said. “Also, it\'s very nice to be a goalie because you\'re always communicating with others and when you block a shot, you can\'t help but feel a sense of happiness.” (Eliza Vargas)$

$Downey High\'s varsity baseball team played against cross town rivals, Warren High on April 9, with closer Sebastian Diaz, 12.“The game was tough against Warren and when their fans started talking a lot of smack so it got tougher.” Diaz said. “At the end, we got clutch hits and we kept ourselves in the game with Noah’s [Orterga, 12] pitching and mine, and our teams offense. $Having watched many videos of people doing the \"Birdbox\" challenge, senior Jimmy Adrian learned from his friends that the film was a must-watch; what he was not expecting was how intimidated he was by the characters. “The main actress Sandra Bullock was so serious and intimidating,” Adrian said. “For me, the little girl in the movie put on the best performance for someone her age.”$
