A look inside the Downey Farmers Market

Reflecting on her routine as a produce marketer, family owned business Bonanza Farm, starts their Saturday mornings at 4am to pick ripe fruit and collect organic vegetables to supply at the Downey Farmers Market. Norely states that throughout the change in locations, safety requirements, and abnormal decline in incoming customers, she has found happiness in providing for her habitual shoppers. “There’s fruits and vegetables, jewelry, and tamales sold every weekend—it's a great way to support your local community,” states the young entrepreneur.

With a passion for writing and a new found love for photography, Maya Guzman, 12, is entering her first year as a staff member for the Downey Legend Newspaper. The summer going into her junior year of High School, Guzman went from being a Whittier High Cardinal to a Downey High Viking, making the decision to transfer based on wanting to further her water polo career. Guzman has been on varsity all 4 years of high school and a co-captain her sophomore year, she also dreams of pursuing a career in medicine.
“Writing has become a huge outlet for me, it has helped me express myself in so many more ways than I knew was ever possible,” Guzman stated. “I have always been outspoken and I love to speak and write about things I am passionate about.”

Valerie Mora, Photographer
Entering her first year as a photographer, Valerie Mora, 10, hopes to expand her interest in journalism and push herself outside her comfort zone to achieve her college and career goals. Outside of school, Mora dedicates her time to photography, fashion design, and community service. After high school, she plans to attend either UCLA or USC, major in Psychology, and become a psychologist.
“Something about the human brain and the way it works and the way certain people react to certain situations based on how they were raised or things that have happened to them just really interests me,” Mora said. “I like to figure things out, I like analyzing things, and I want to help those people who have struggled with mental illnesses so that they don’t feel alone.”
