A current photographer this year for the Newspaper at Downey High School, Brisa Rodriguez, 12, is showing off her skills developed from her past two years in Photojournalism. Rodriguez has been apart of the Law Enforcement class for six years, and has been playing basketball for five years. She enjoys helping people, and can help more with her developed skills.

 

Rodriguez became interested in law enforcement unintentionally discovering her passion for it, “When I was a sophomore, I was accidentally placed into the Law Enforcement club. It was really interesting.” Although unsure of what career to pursue within law enforcement, Rodriguez plans to improve any and all skills needed to pursue her dream.

Downey High student, Jaylene Chinchilla, 11, has always had a great passion for makeup. “My mom has a degree in cosmetology and I grew up seeing all the women in my family being very into beauty so I feel like that’s where my interest really sparked,” stated Chinchilla. “Once I got old enough to further my interest in it is when I started to make it a hobby, no matter if I was happy or not having a good day doing my makeup is where I would turn to.”

At one of the many after school meetings for the Eco Club, Marie Olmedo, 12, takes over the presentation and expresses her feelings towards the tragic events going on right now related to environmental issues. “I like to get myself involved with the activities that can help the environment” said Olmedo “For example attending beach clean ups monthly.”

President of new club; “Game Over”, Cameron Carrasco, 11, hosts his first club. “We [club founders] want all of the students to have a place to hang out so that no one feels alone,” stated Carrasco. “Right now we are playing games that will help us to know each other a little more.”

As the director from Large Group Drama, Saul Conde, 12, was proud and passionate about their competition as they take the 9th place trophy. “DTASC has multiple categories and we had entered in large group drama which the only thing was to pick any dramatic piece, do it in 8 minutes, 4 chairs and no more than 6 people.” Conde stated “We were trying to replicate all of the KOS and terror one feels when going through a suicidal period.”

“Downey Walks” Exhibition

Urban designer of the program Here LA, Thomson Dryjanski, joined the Stay Gallery to get people involved in a fun activity of learning how individuals travel around Downey. “People walk up and down and walk by and you see them walk with their head-turning,” stated Dryjanski. “You see people doing it as they walk by and they wanna join in, it’s a group activity,” concluded Dryjanski.

The Stay Gallery hosted a city project for the city of Downey and Miguel Nuñez, project manager of the Here LA studio introduced the walk project to all who joined the gallery. “We are doing an engagement activity to try and get the people to know about the project and get info from them,” said Nuñez. “We are essentially asking people how they walk around, where do you walk to and where do you walk from.”

Hoping to show citizens different routes around Downey, Chad So, a co-worker of the organization Here LA, welcomes the community to visit the Stay Gallery. Using creativity through art made this possible, “We try to get away from kind of a traditional average boards and we like to make it more interactive and immersive,” said So. “I think this helps to attract more of an audience, makes it more exciting more fun and playful for people to engage with.”

Downey High School’s Stop The Trafficking club, Aubriana Lopez, 12,is the secritary from this club she was influenced to join this club after learning about slavery in the 1800’s from her history class. “ I know slavery is not a thing anymore,” Lopez continued “ But modern day slavery of sex trafficking is a thing and it’s so very alive today.” This club was created to raise awareness and inform the community about the dangers surrounding us.

As the secretary from Downey High School’s Stop The Trafficking club, Aubriana Lopez,12, was influenced to join this club after learning about slavery in the 1800. “ I know slavery is not a thing anymore,” Lopez continued “ But moddern day slavery of sex trafficking is a thing and its so very alive today.” concluded Lopez. This club was created to raise awareness and inform the community about the dangers surrounding us.

Being the president of the Stop The Traffick club, here at Downey High School is influencing Sade Neri,12, to help make a change in todays society by helping her peers to understand the tragedies that happen in the real world. “Im able to race awareness and empower other student to be more involved in this raging issue that isnt really talked about,” said Neri.”I think is really important that we have a club on campus that is able to spread awareness.” concluded Neri.

As the vice president of the Stop The Traffick club “3 Am Girls” Devin Ayala, 12, is very excited to take such a big position in this club. “Being in a club that is very appointed to social justice is very hard to directly influence the people that are involved or the victims,” Ayala said“ One big thing to take away from the club is that you will have a position.”

Formerly known as the LGBTQ+ Club, the Rainbow Alliance kicked off the school year on Club Day, with their booth, spreading the awareness of the alliance and what they hope to accomplish. “This isn’t just a club for LGBTQ+ people,” Jezzebel Rodriguez, 11, the club’s President, explains, “We are called an alliance because we want to include other people. History states that we didn’t get here by ourselves, it took help from friends, too.”

Downey High School successfully made Maryam Abdelmonem, 9, feel welcomed as she starts a new experience, being active in school activities is allowing her to integrate faster . “The environment here is good, amazing” said Abdelmonem. Wanting to continue attending school events, Abdelmonem stated, “ Seeing everyone happy here, makes me feel happy”.
