On his final march, conductor of Downey High’s marching band, Matthew Chavez, 12, euphorically leads the band to a night of high spirited clamor. “When I get up on the stand in front of everyone I feel myself disappear,” Chavez stated. “I live in the music and I never fail to receive an electrifying experience, each stronger than the one before.”
