On the evening of Dec. 3 the varsity boys wrestling team reigned in the Downey Duals meet and taking 3 place at the home tournament.
The wrestling team is hoping to continue last years accomplishments of San Gabriel Valley League Champions and CIF champions. With extensive workouts the team has one goal in mind: success.
“I know it’s going to be a good year,” Rodolfo Farias said. “I know if we try hard we can become CIF champs again.”
The season began with a 3-team tournament against Bell and Norwalk, the pre-league opponents of the Vikes.
The team proved to be successful with a score of 56-4 versus Norwalk and a shut out of 79-0 versus Bell. The team played competitively by scoring various pins and takedowns. These plays granted the Vikes 2 and 4 points continuously.
“It was good we knew that Bell would be an automatic shut out and Norwalk wouldn’t be to hard,” Jacob Barbarena said.
The Downey Duals is a yearly tradition hosted by the wrestling team that seems to be a memorable experience for the crowd. The Downey Duals consists of various schools participating such as Palos Verdes, El Rancho, and Bell.
“I think it’s great to see all the schools get together and come to our turf and play in these great matches,” Fabian Mendoza said.
The Vikes proved to be victorious by placing tnird. Seniors Jacob Barbarena, Steven Johnson, and sophomore Fabian Mendoza went undefeated with 8 pins each. They hope to continue their success in future matches.
Now the wrestling team has stepped out onto the mat and proved victorious in the first two meets. They have one goal left which is that is to reign as the SGVL champs and 2011 CIF champs.
