Homecoming is happening at Downey High school after a whole two years of not being able to have one. Students are finally able to enjoy important events that were not able to happen due to the Covid-19...

First year tutor of the Writing Center, Erika Arteaga, 11, tells us that the Writing Center helps people write more efficiently and be less scared when writing. Arteaga became a tutor by applying with a form she got from her English class and taking a video of why she wants to be a Writing Center Tutor, all because she loves helping people. During One-on-Ones with the tutors, they help people with specific sections that they tend to struggle on. I like that each and every one of the tutors has a different point of view, she said. That can help people come up with a compromise in their writing.

Downey’s cross-country athlete, Alyssa Tapanes, 12, is striving through her senior season and reflected on how she felt being athlete of the week. “I feel honored to be considered for it, especially since it’s being commemorated by the school. It’s just a nice feeling to be recognized for your efforts.” Tapanes stated. “Although I already strive to put out my best work for both my team and coaches, getting recognized for my accomplishments definitely helps motivate me to keep going.”

Our school dance team hosts a refreshing drink stand that is perfect for the hot weather. Delicious agua frescas (flavors such as watermelon and lemonade), Gatorades, and cold waters are sold from $1 to $6. It is currently a “hot spot” for students after school on Thursdays that catches everyones eyes. No one would want to miss out on this perfect opportunity.
“I started Thirsty Thursdays with the Dance Team girls in order to help us fundraise for our intense year, especially since we hope to go to Florida again this year! With the support from our coach, team moms, and peers… this fundraiser has been able to be a huge success and we hope to continue it every Thursday throughout this hot weather.” - Maya Mercado-Garcia, 12.

Preparing for a special annual event, Downey High School students are getting the school pumped up at the stage during snack, by hosting their yearly pep rally for the Dig Pink volleyball game. The volleyball players are ready to finally compete against their rival, Warren High School, but there’s more importance to the game besides just winning. The volleyball players are playing to honor those who have fought and are continuing to fight the battle against breast cancer. To further create awareness for this occasion, the athletes, dance team, cheer team, and many other individuals are spreading their viking pride by wearing pink.

Now that schools are starting to open back up for the 2021-2022 school year, Downey High School has finally been able to return in person to campus school starting August 11, 2021. On March 13th, 2020 Downey High students were told they would only be staying home for two weeks max; which ended up being up to a year and a half of quarantine. Approximately 4000 students have come back to school and 300 stayed distance stated by Mr. Houts, Downeys fearless leader and principal. As for students attending Downey High, 300 students are still doing distance learning making many students unaware of Downey’s school spirit and as for the new students how are they liking Downey after not being there in such a long time.
