On Friday, October 13, 2023, the Downey Vikings took on the cross-town rivalry Warren Bears at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood. Both schools had the amazing opportunity to compete in one of the biggest stadiums in the world, the SoFi Stadium. Being granted the opportunity of being part of “LA Bowl Friday Night Lights” and being sponsored by the “LA Bowl”, its publicity reaches even further than the city of Downey, allowing the LA Times to write an article about the rivalry game. This war zone-filled stadium seated with over 18,000 students, staff, alumni, and residents of Downey evidently ended in favor of the Warren Bears with a score of 28-21.

Starting the fun for the “big game”, Downey High School is hosting their annual Downey Vs. Warren Rivalry Spirit Week. Downey Vs. Warren Rivalry Spirit Week is hosted by Downey High ASB, and they have made every day enjoyable for everyone to go all out. Introducing these festivities on the first day, Monday was “Don’t Sleep On Downey”, Tuesday was “Stay On Your Turf Tuesday”, Wednesday was “1 Team Dream”, Thursday, the most popular day was “Warren Wimp Day, and ending off on Friday was “Fearless Friday”. Downey High School students kicked off their best outfits for the week, showing off their pride for their school but also indicating to their rival, Warren High School, whose house it really is. Preparing for a special annual event, Downey High School students are getting the school pumped up at the stage during snack, by hosting their yearly pep rally for the Dig Pink volleyball game. The volleyball players are ready to finally compete against their rival, Warren High School, but there’s more importance to the game besides just winning. The volleyball players are playing to honor those who have fought and are continuing to fight the battle against breast cancer. To further create awareness for this occasion, the athletes, dance team, cheer team, and many other individuals are spreading their viking pride by wearing pink.

The bright and happy lights with chilly fall weather brings out a happy mood that defines the very essence of Christmas,” Placide stated.

As Viking Nation is full of smiles and excitement, Molly Houts (FarRight), 12, is excited to dance at Homecoming and get dressed up with all her friends. “I’m kind of bummed that Homecoming is the only dance until Prom because I really wanted to go to Winter Formal,” Houts stated. “It’s my senior year and I wanted to attend all dances.”
