The annual Met Gala took place on May 5th in New York, New York, for the fundraising of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which honors the formation of black identities. The official Met Gala website describes the theme as: “ The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism… Superfine: Tailoring Black Style explores the importance of the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, particularly in the United States and Europe. Through a presentation of garments and accessories, paintings, photographs, decorative arts, and more, from the 18th century to today, the exhibition interprets the concepts of dandyism as both an aesthetic and a strategy that allowed for new social and political possibilities.” The Met Gala celebrates the opening of the Met’s spring exhibition. The Met Gala is held annually on the first Monday of May since it marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit.
Eleanor Lambert, founder of New York Fashion Week and a fashion publicist, founded and established the Met Gala in 1948 for the newly founded Costume Institute. The Met Gala is currently overseen by Anna Wintour, who has been the Vogue editor-in-chief since 1999. Since the Met is invite-only, every guest must be approved by Wintour. Andrew Bolton, the Costume Insitute’s curator, is responsible for curating the theme for the exhibition.
Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour co-chaired the Met this year. Emma Chamberlain hosted red carpet interviews for Vogue.
