The Rise of Dodie Clark

Jasmine Fernandez, Editor-In-Chief

After six years of covers, original songs, and chatty videos, Dodie Clark released her first single, “Sick of Losing Soulmates” in anticipation of her new EP entitled Intertwined, which is set to release on November 18. Although “Sick of Losing Soulmates” is not a new song of Clark’s, the studio recording emerged with new sound that pays homage to the original acoustic while reconstructing most of the song’s backing instrumentals. Originally published on November 20, 2015 on Clark’s YouTube channel, the song is a result of an early morning conversation she had had with an unnamed friend, which contributes to the meaning she is trying to relay: the sanctity of relationships. The second verse of the song spoke to me, as Clark croons: “Time and hearts will wear us thin, so which path will you take ‘cause we both know a break does exactly what it says on the tin.” Clark’s wording is almost ethereal in contrast to the heartbreaking reality of her message, using a mutual understanding of the circumstances at stake as a point of emphasis. Between the lyricism and melodies, “Sick of Losing Soulmates” is one of my favorite songs of Clark’s, on or off of her EP. Intertwined is yet to be released, but “Sick of Losing Soulmates” is available on iTunes now as well as on Clark’s YouTube channel at http://youtube.com/doddleoddle.
